Exploring Capri

Overview of Capri

Capri is a magical island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Italy. It’s divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri. Capri town is lively and bustling, with narrow streets filled with charming boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Anacapri, on the other hand, offers a more serene and picturesque setting with breathtaking views and quieter vibes.

I was immediately captivated by the natural beauty of Capri. From the stunning vistas and clear blue waters to the lush greenery and dramatic cliffs, it felt like stepping into a postcard. One of my favorite spots to take in the panoramic views was from Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island.

Transportation Options

Getting around Capri is an adventure in itself. The primary modes of transport on the island include the funicular, buses, taxis, and even boats. Here’s how I navigated the island:

From Marina Grande

Marina Grande, the tourist and commercial port of Capri, is the entry point for most visitors arriving by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento, and other coastal towns. This port offers stunning views of the Bay of Naples and colorful houses that line the shore (Capri).

From Marina Grande, I took the funicular up to the historic center of Capri town. The ride was quick and offered a unique perspective of the island. If you’re headed to Anacapri, buses depart from both Marina Grande and Capri town.

Funicular

The funicular is a cable railway that provides a scenic route from Marina Grande to Capri town center. It’s an affordable and speedy option for travelers, offering a thrilling ascent.

Buses

Buses are the backbone of public transportation on Capri, connecting the port, Capri town, and Anacapri. They are frequent, reliable, and provide access to some of the island’s more remote areas, including Points of interest like the Blue Grotto.

Taxis and Private Cars

Taxis in Capri are unique, often open-top convertibles that offer a glamorous way to travel around the island. While more expensive, they provide comfort and flexibility, especially for exploring the less accessible parts of the island.

Boats

Exploring the island by boat is a must-do activity. Boat tours depart from Marina Grande, including trips to the famous Blue Grotto. These tours give a different perspective of Capri, showcasing its stunning coastline and hidden coves (Capri).

Top Attractions in Capri

During my trip to Capri, Italy, I had the pleasure of exploring some of the island’s top attractions. Here are the highlights that you definitely don’t want to miss.

Blue Grotto Experience

The Blue Grotto was at the top of my list of things to do in Capri Italy. This iconic site amazed me with its brilliant blue water. The transition from total darkness to the sparkling blue of the cavern was truly unforgettable.

To visit the Blue Grotto, I took a boat from Marina Grande and purchased a ticket at the Motoscafisti and Laser Capri charter companies. You can also get there by walking or taking a bus from Anacapri. The Blue Grotto is a natural sea cave, 60 meters long and 25 meters wide, with an entrance only two meters wide and about a meter high (Capri.com). Visitors board small rowboats, each carrying up to four passengers, to enter the grotto.

Gardens of Augustus

The Gardens of Augustus offered a serene escape with breathtaking views of the island. Lush flora and beautifully landscaped terraces provided the perfect backdrop for my stroll. Located close to Capri town, these gardens offer panoramic views of the iconic Faraglioni rock formations and the winding Via Krupp.

I highly recommend taking a leisurely walk through the gardens, as it’s a peaceful way to soak in the natural beauty of Capri. The entrance fee was quite reasonable, and it’s a great spot for photographers looking to capture picturesque landscapes.

Punta Carena Lighthouse

Punta Carena Lighthouse, located on the western coast of Capri, is another must-visit attraction. This active lighthouse is the second most important in Italy, after Genoa. Visiting Punta Carena was an enriching experience, offering stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the nearby cliffs.

The lighthouse is accessible via a scenic walk or a short drive from Anacapri. It’s open to visitors, offering a unique glimpse into its historical significance and operational mechanisms. The best time to visit is at sunset when the golden hues illuminate the landscape.

Visitors can also relax at nearby beach clubs or enjoy a meal at local restaurants offering delicious Capri cuisine.

Visiting the Blue Grotto

Blue Grotto Details

One of the most enchanting experiences on my trip was visiting the Blue Grotto in Capri. This natural sea cave is renowned for its vibrant blue waters that seem to glow from within. The phenomenon is created by sunlight passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, which creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.

Entering the Blue Grotto is an adventure in itself. The cave can only be accessed when the tide is low and the sea is calm. Skippers navigate wooden rowboats through the small cave mouth, and passengers must lie down flat as they enter the grotto (Qantas Travel Insider). The transition from the outside world’s brightness into the cavern’s dark enclosure, followed by the sudden burst of azure light, is truly magical and unforgettable (YourLifeChoices).

Visiting Information

The Blue Grotto is managed similarly to a museum, and visitors need to purchase entrance tickets at the grotto entrance itself (Capri). To get there, I took a private boat tour that anchored near the grotto’s entrance, and then transferred to a rowboat to access the cave. It’s important to note that weather and sea conditions can affect whether the grotto is open for visits. Always check the current conditions before planning your visit.

Planning your visit to the Blue Grotto? Here are some tips:

  • Aim to visit early in the morning to avoid the long queues.
  • Confirm sea conditions and grotto accessibility before heading there.
  • Bring cash for ticket purchases as credit card facilities may not be available on-site.
